Bishop Gerald E. Miller

Bishop Gerald E. Miller, 84, Mechanicsburg, passed peacefully Wednesday surrounded by his family at Country Meadows, Mechanicsburg.

He was born in West Sand Lake, N.Y., son of the late Edmund and Cora (Hidley) Miller.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Jean (Rothermel); two sons: David and wife, Juane, of Mechanicsburg and Geoffrey and wife, Cynthia, of Highland, N.Y.; two daughters: Deborah Knuth and husband, Paul, of Camp Hill and Diane Houghton of Mechanicsburg; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Arthur and Raymond; and a sister, Evelyn Wilson.

Gerald was a graduate of Hartwick College, Oneonta, N.Y., and later received his Master of Divinity from Philadelphia Seminary. He received an honorary doctorate in 1988 from Susquehanna University. He served as pastor to four Lutheran churches before becoming assistant to the bishop in the Central Pennsylvania Synod and was later elected bishop of the Allegheny Synod in 1987.

Gerald loved baseball, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates, traveling, music, fishing and most of all his family.

Friends will be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. service of celebration Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 44 W. Main St., Shiremanstown, Pastor Michael L. Seifried officiating.
