James Mack Elder, 64, Pooler, Ga., formerly of Altoona, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga.
He was born in Hornell, N.Y., son of the late Donald Mack and Julia (Knight) Elder.
Surviving are his wife, Cheryl (Rhoades); two daughters: Amy Elder of Altoona and Maj. Holly Cribb (Maj. Michael Cribb) of El Paso, Texas; a grandson, James Cribb; two stepsons: Chad Rhoades (Karen) of Altoona and Michael Rhoades of Pittsburgh; a sister, Sally Soules (Bill) of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, John (Barb) of Horseheads, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen (Nichols).
James served his country in the U.S. Navy and retired from Norfolk Southern after 43 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and enjoyed playing golf and helping his friends and neighbors.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Railroaders Memorial Museum.
