Edgar Dean Nelson, 84, Spruce Creek, died Friday at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon.

He was born in Bellwood, son of the late William Edgar and Beulah Mae (French) Nelson.

On April 21, 1985, he married Dorothea Detwiler Beegle at Zion Lutheran church in Hollidaysburg, by the Rev. Norris.

Edgar is survived by his wife; children: Howard William Constantine Nelson of Spruce Creek, John Jacob Nicholas Nelson of Everett and Richard Larue Eaton (Tina) Nelson of Hollidaysburg; three step-children: Pamela (Charles) Richardson of Charlottesville, Va., Gaye (Charles) Shamburg of Annapolis, Md., and Lisa Beegle of Hollidaysburg; five grandchildren and one sister, Betty Emma Miller of Bellwood.

He was preceded in death by a son, Granville Owre-Nelson.

Edgar taught in Mexico and also at the Cherry Lawn School, Darien, Conn.; Hobart College, Geneva, N.Y.; Mansfield State College; Bloomsburg State College and Huntingdon Area High School.

He was a 1946 graduate of Bellwood High School and studied for two semesters at Penn State. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of the Americus in Mexico and did coursework at Cornell. He received a master's of education from Penn State, where he did graduate work toward a doctorate degree.

He was a member of St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, Tyrone, and of the American Foreign Language Association. Edgar was also a U.S. Navy veteran, having served from 1946 to 1949.

There will be no public visitation.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec., 3, 2012, at St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, with Father Jozef Kovacik as celebrant. Interment will be made in Franklinville Cemetery, Huntingdon County.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Edgar's memory to St. Matthew's Catholic School, 1105 Cameron Avenue, Tyrone, PA 16686.

Arrangements are under the care of the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., 115 W. 10th St., Tyrone, PA 16686.
