Logan Township police and Greenwood firefighters responded to a fatal auto-pedestrian crash on East Sixth Avenue Road at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Ventre's family told Guyer he would walk to collect his mail in the evenings. He was wearing "fairly dark" clothing at the time, Guyer said.
Logan Township Police Lt. Gil Barton said the vehicle was traveling west on East Sixth Avenue Road when Ventre crossed in front of it. The driver had applied the brakes.
At the scene, the car with a smashed windshield sat off to the side of the roadway.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to a hospital for cuts on the hands from the shattered windshield, Barton said.
It was too early to say if charges would be filed, he said early Wednesday evening. The driver voluntarily agreed to testing, and was apparently coming from work, he said.
Greenwood firefighters blocked off a section of the avenue near Priority Street as an Altoona police accident reconstructionist assisted at the scene.
