Chester P. McCarty Jr.

Chester P. McCarty Jr., 74, Graystone Court, Roaring Spring, formerly of Alexandria, died unexpectedly Sunday at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh.

He was born in Barree, Huntingdon County, son of the late Chester P. and Madeline (Shultz) McCarty. He married Phyllis H. Curry on June 27, 1959, at Alexandria United Methodist Church, the Rev. Edmund Minnick officiating.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Wendy L. Spayd of Alexandria; three grandchildren: Brandon M. Spayd of State College and Lindsey N. and Samantha R. Spayd, both of Alexandria; a great-grandchild, Braylon M. Spayd of Alexandria; two sisters: Naomi M. (McCarty) Ross and husband, Marshall, of Alexandria and Helen C. McCarty of Petersburg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ellen (McCarty) Henrie.

Chester attended the Juniata Valley public schools in Alexandria. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard 104th Armored Cavalry Regiment for eight years. He was employed by Bonney Forge Corp., retiring in 2000 after 38 years of service. He was a member of the Crever Memorial United Methodist Church, Petersburg, and the Martinsburg Sportsmen's Association and a former member of the Alexandria Sportsman's Club.

Chester loved cooking for family and friends and was well known for his hot peppers. He was an avid NASCAR fan, especially of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. He enjoyed hunting and taking fishing trips to Alaska, Erie and New York. He also enjoyed woodworking and making quality furniture in his workshop. He especially enjoyed following his grandchildren's sporting events and spending time with his Shih Tzu, Bubba.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 9 until the 10 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon, Pastor Luvania Renninger officiating. Interment will be at Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in remembrance of Chester may be made to the Huntingdon County Humane Society, 11371 School House Hollow Road, Huntingdon, PA 16652.
