Little Lions shut down Beavers’ high-scoring act

DuBois averaged nearly 50 points per game this season, but State College had a plan to slow down the Beavers.

The plan worked as State College knocked off the Beavers, 35-13, in the District 6-9 Class AAAA championship game Friday at Mansion Park.

"We thought we were stronger up front so we challenged the defensive line to get off the ball, squeeze to the inside and blow up the trapping guard. That's their number one play," State College coach Al Wolski said.

State College (9-3) advanced to the first round of the PIAA playoffs for a matchup with District 8-10 champ McDowell next weekend. DuBois' season ended at 8-2.

The Little Lions defense held the DuBois fast-paced, no-huddle offense to 48 yards in the first half on their way to a 21-0 halftime lead.

DuBois had a particularly hard time blocking Evan Galimberti and Amir Haywood.

"They were very stout inside, and it started with those two," DuBois coach Frank Varischetti said. "Then our center and guard were injured and didn't return. We really struggled to run after that."

State College held DuBois to three-and-out on its first two possessions, and the Little Lions offense mounted two lengthy scoring drives that kept the Beavers offense on the sideline.

"Our defense stopping them to open the game was huge," Wolski said. "The defensive coaching staff did a great job preparing and the defense answered the challenge."

State College ran 13 plays covering 68 yards on its first drive. Pat Irwin completed 5-of-5 passes on the drive for 49 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown toss to Darian Herncane for a 7-0 lead.

A seven-play, 57-yard drive capped by Dan Fry's 10-yard touchdown run put the Little Lions up 14-0.

DuBois found some running room on the ensuing drive and had a first-and-goal, but State College recovered a fumble to turn the Beavers away.

Two plays later, Irwin ran a option keeper, split two defenders and outraced the DuBois defense 88 yards to the end zone.

"That definitely shifted momentum. If we score there, it's 14-7 going into the half," Varischetti said.

DuBois threatened to get back in the game in the third quarter.

After Shane Marshall scored on a 2-yard run to make it a 21-7 game, DuBois forced State College to punt deep from its own end on the Little Lions ensuing possession.

Fry saved a high snap from going out the back of the end zone and got off a 53-yard punt, driving DuBois back on to its own side of the field.

"He's a great athlete. His versatility allows us to so many different things," Wolski said. "That was a big, big play."

DuBois never got another chance to close the gap. State College punched in two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Ryan Goeke scored on a 6-yard run, and Fry quickly followed with a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown.

DuBois closed out the scoring when Jarred Baummer turned a short pass from Bryson Paulinellie into a 20-yard touchdown.
