Needs don’t stop

November 12, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

I have been pondering what it means to be "pro-life" for conservatives. They believe that every life is precious and the rights of the unborn must be protected.

I also think that life is precious, but society's responsibility doesn't end when the child is born. Many "severe" conservatives want to cut programs that provide nutrition to children and their moms, programs such as food stamps and WIC.

What about medical care for that child? Once again, that's not that important to "severe" conservatives. They want to make drastic cuts to Medicaid. Conservative governors have taken health care coverage away from thousands of children.

Should we make sure that child gets a quality education? Conservatives want to cut education. That includes that child's opportunity to continue his or her education after high school.

This is the confusing part to me. How can people fight so hard for the rights of the unborn but not really concern themselves too much with what happens after that child is born? They should be fighting just as hard to make sure that child has shelter, nutrition, health care and a quality education.
