Jean (Schandelmier) Holt, 98, formerly of Altoona, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, in Raleigh, N.C., after a short illness.

Surviving are three sons: Tom of Germantown, Md., Andy of Morgantown, W.Va., and Fred of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lois Schandelmier of Hollidaysburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John A.B. Holt; a sister, Alice Hileman Bulger; and a brother, Wayne Schandelmier, a WWII air-sea rescue pilot.

Raised and educated in Altoona, Jean was a registered nurse at the Marine Hospital, Baltimore, Md., before moving to Charleston, W.Va., in 1948 and living there until 2002. She served in the West Virginia House of Delegates and was on the Charleston City Council as an at-large member for several terms. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, and was active in several other community service organizations.

Jean will be honored with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg, 220 Newry St., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Raleigh Presbyterian Church, 11905 Strickland Road, Raleigh, NC 27613 (Memo: Jean Holt Memorial Fund), to benefit the church's community outreach mission at Christmastime.
