Glendale football wins, now in postseason

JOHNSTOWN - Glendale Vikings football coach Matt Irvine might have to send out an extra Christmas card this year - to the Portage Mustangs.

Glendale went into the weekend needing either a loss by Northern Cambria or Homer Center Friday, and a win over Ferndale Saturday, to earn a spot in the playoffs. Portage gave the Vikings a present by defeating Homer Center, 20-14.

That put Glendale in charge of its own destiny.

The Vikings took full advantage, scoring 20 points in the first quarter, and adding 28 more in the third frame, in route to a 48-0 win for a trip to the playoffs.

Glendale will now play at Bellwood-Antis next weekend in the first round of the District 6 Class A playoffs.

"We knew what we had to do to get into the playoffs, and we did it," said Irvine. "The attitude of the kids was 'let's win and play one more.' None of these guys were ready for it to be over with yet, and I think they showed it."

Glendale got off to a rough start. Ferndale did a short kickoff that the Yellow Jackets came up with after a scramble.

However, Damon?Braniff played more than well enough to help Glendale get on the scoreboard. He scored on runs of 34 and 22 yards in less than a four-minute span for a 12-0 lead.

An interception by Matt Bantly gave Glendale's offense another short field. Glendale responded with an eight-play drive to add to the lead.

Gary Witherow lofted a touchdown pass to Shea O'Donnell on fourth-and-10 from the 28, as O'Donnell caught the pass behind two Ferndale defenders. Braniff ran in the two point conversion for a 20-0 lead, which was what the score was at halftime.

The Vikings scored four times in the third quarter. Braniff had a 100-yard interception return for a score and a 2-yard run. Sam Witherow scored on a 76-yard run and Troxell returned a fumble 10 yards for another score.

"With Bellwood there is a little familiarity," said Irvine. "We played them last week. We'll watch our tape, see what we messed up on, and give it all we got."
