Joseph E. Riggle, 83, Martha's Manor, Lilly, passed away Wednesday.

He was born in Blair County, son of Irene Price. He shared a home with Trella A. Bowser for more than 50 years, and she passed away on Nov. 9, 1996.

Joe never had children of his own but dearly loved Trella's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he helped in many ways to support and befriend them. He is survived by Trella's children: Eugene, Fred, Blanche Smith, Mabel Helbig, Raymond, Fern Miner and Lucy Long; and his best buddy for more than 48 years, Dick Long.

He was preceded in death by Trella's children: Lemuel, Elwood, Roy and Chester.

Joseph proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from Nov. 9, 1948, until his honorable discharge on July 14, 1952. He served with the 5th Constabulary Squadron in Germany, where he earned an occupation medal and was an intermediate radio operator.

He loved hunting, woodworking and playing music with his guitar, especially at nursing homes and other public places.

Joe shared more than eight years with Emma Jean Buchkovich and her family, who treated him like family. He spent his last two years at Martha's Manor with his family members, Eugene and Martha Bowser and their family. He loved staying there and made many wonderful friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of his immediate family.

Arrangements are by J. Edward Blackburn Funeral Home, Alum Bank.
