UPDATE: Sandy forces schedule changes

October 29, 2012
From Mirror reports (sports@altoonamirror.com) , The Altoona Mirror

Hurricane Sandy still hadn't made landfall when its effects were already being felt on the area high school soccer and volleyball playoff schedules.

With area schools closing and warnings of flooding and power outages predicted, District 6 and District 5 officials decided to be proactive and move back several early-week events.

The District 6 volleyball playoffs slated for tonight have been pushed back to Wednesday. The district originally was going to try to hold first-round matches on Tuesday but decided the better of it later today.

The finals in Class AA and A are slated for Saturday at the Altoona Area High School Field House, with Class AAA on Wednesday at Tyrone. According to volleyball chairman Jim Price, the PIAA needed to know the teams that advanced to the state tournament by this weekend, but he acknowledged that it might delay that since the storm is a statewide event and several districts might have problems meeting that deadline.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Tuesday schedule already had been postponed. The District 6 semifinals in Class AA and A all have been pushed back to Thursday, although times and sites will remain the same. Hollidaysburg's Class AAA boys final against State College will stay on Wednesday at Bald Eagle Area High School in Wingate at 5:30 p.m.

District 5 volleyball play-in round action now will be Wednesday at Chestnut Ridge at 5 p.m. and North Star at 6 p.m. with the semifinals planned for Thursday at sites and times to be announced. The four District 5 Class A boys and girls soccer matches also have been rescheduled for Wednesday.
