Barbara E. "Feedie" Halmsteiner, 91, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Altoona, died Tuesday at the home after a brief illness.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late John and Katarina (Freihaut) Letscher. She married Joseph P. "Pep" Halmsteiner on Jan. 23, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altoona, and he preceded her in death in 1992.
Surviving are many nieces and nephews and a close friend, Katie Gehl.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers: Charles, Jacob "Jim," John, Emiel, Tobias, Joseph "Boob" and Paul; and three sisters: Mary Dirrigl, Catherine Strassburger and Anna Stehle. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Barbara was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and also belonged to Unter Uns Trachtenverein and Unter Uns Retired Ladies Club. She enjoyed crocheting, music and singing and was a member of the former Letscher Family Orchestra.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church by Monsignor Timothy Stein. Committal will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Garvey Manor Nursing Home.
