Lady Marauders capture own tourney

Lady Marauder senior setter Rachel Potopa was named most valuable player of the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School Girls Volleyball Tournament Saturday at the Pleasant Valley gymnasium.

Bishop Guilfoyle topped Bishop Carroll in the championship match, 25-22, to claim the title. BG advanced to the finals by defeating Northern Cambria, 25-13, in the semifinals.

Potopa recorded 81 assists and 26 service points to earn the MVP honor.

BG's Annie Dombrowski added 42 kills followed by Lindsie Welteroth (36 kills), Jennifer Patterson (22 kills) and Alexis Hicks (16 kills). Logan McIntosh added 72 digs and 25 service points, Brynee Baughman served 35 points, and Juliana Burke recorded 14 blocks.

BG placed three players (McIntosh, Dombrowski and Welteroth) on the all-tournament team.

Carroll landed three players on the all-tournament team in Sarah Gomish, Ellie Yahner and Nicole Woomer. Other all-tourney selections were Northern Cambria's Kelly Lieb and Lakyn Fornari, and Purchase Line's Danielle Thornton.

Bishop Carroll captured the top seed in pool play with a 7-1 record followed by BG (6-2), Northern Cambria (3-5) and Purchase Line (2-6) and Bishop McCort (2-6).

Gomish led BC with 71 kills, while Yahner added 28 kills and 42 points. Janelle Gueguen recorded 98 assists. Woomer served up 26 points, and Rachel Kwisnek had 23.

Northern Cambria defeated BG in the junior varsity tournament final, 25-23.

WEXFORD - Altoona's high school girls volleyball team topped Shaler, 25-21, but lost to Mount Lebanon (25-11), Mars (25-23), Baldwin (26-24), Fox Chapel (25-20), North Allegheny (25-16), Knoch (25-12) and Plum (25-22) at the North Allegheny Invitational.

Hannah Moore had 13 kills, 23 digs and seven service points on the day, Natalie Biesecker notched 17 digs, and Aubrey Hileman had 28 assists.

ALTOONA: Goodman 14, Parrish 10, Moore 7, Koelle 6, Hileman 5, Biesecker 4, Abram 3, Albright 3.

C-K wins JV tourney

MARTINSBURG - Claysburg-Kimmel edged Northern Bedford, 18-25, 25-15, 15-8, in the junior varsity volleyball championship at Central High School.

Northern Bedford had beaten Tussey Mountain, 25-21, in the semifinals.

Altoona jayvees lose

John McGinley connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Zac McConnell, and James Metzgar kicked a 33-yard field goal, but the Altoona junior varsity football team (5-2) came up short against 8-0 Central Catholic at Mansion Park, 16-10.

BELLEFONTE - Kyrstin Johnson scored a pair of goals, and Megan Stewart tacked on another as Great Commission topped Columbia County, 3-1, in the third-place game of the Allegheny Christian Athletic Assocation girls soccer tournament.

Johnson, Jaissle McCoy, Rachel Clark and Jordan Dawson made the ACAA all-star squad for the season, and the Lady Bears finished the year 15-5.
