Betty Jane Dunkel, 88, Tyrone, died Friday as a resident of Epworth Manor.

She was born in Sandy Ridge, Pa., daughter of James and Harriet May (Shock) Updike. On Aug. 27, 1948, she married Edward M. Dunkel Jr. in Philipsburg. He died on Dec. 28, 2008.

She is survived by children: James Ronald Dunkel (Roberta), Donna Kay Walker (Doug), Linda Sue Yaudes (Mark), Timothy L. Dunkel (Terri) and Karen Marie Harpster (Dan), all of Tyrone; a step-daughter, Dorothy May Boninger (Mike) of Carlisle; a stepson, Edward M. Dunkel III (Mary Ann) and daughter, Barbara Jean Friday, of Bald Eagle; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Helen; a stepdaughter, Jane Harris; four brothers and nine sisters.

She was a lifelong member of the Northwood Baptist Chapel and attended the Warriors Mark Bible Baptist Church.

Betty loved cooking and baking and making meals for shut-ins.

She had been employed as a cook for Tyrone Schools and Grier School for 27 years, and at Camp Anderson Boy Scout Camp for 28 years.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, and from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, at the Warriors Mark Bible Baptist Church, with Pastor Alan Kilian officiating. Interment will be at Bald Eagle Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Warriors Mark Bible Baptist Church or to the Alzheimer's Association, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Harrisburg, PA 17110.
