Guilfoyle dominates Red Devils

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic continues to impress opposing coaches.

The Marauders built a 27-0 halftime lead and rolled to a 33-0 victory over Central Cambria in a Laurel Highlands Conference Section 1 game Saturday night at Mansion Park.

The homecoming win was the sixth in seven starts for BG and kept the Marauders perfect (5-0) in conference play.

After watching his team suffer its sixth loss in seven games, CC coach Sam Shutty remarked: "I was very impressed with Bishop Guilfoyle. They are very, very athletic. They're very talented from the top down, and they showed it tonight."

The Marauders were near perfect in the first half, scoring on four straight possessions before the Red Devils stopped them at the 1 on the final play of the half.

"They controlled the line of scrimmage, and I think our guys were a little off guard," Shutty said. "There's things you can tell on film and there's things you can't tell on film, and the strength of the line you can't get off film.

"They were definitely more than we could handle," he said. "Our guys were shocked with their speed. They're definitely fast, and very, very good."

The Marauders' offensive line opened huge holes for quarterback Pat Irwin and running backs A.J. Kitt and Cody Rossman, enabling BG to rack up 248 rushing yards.

Irwin, who finished with 108 yards on the ground, ran for 99 and scored three touchdowns on 13 first-half carries. Kitt scored twice on short runs while Rossman gained 94 on 12 carries.

BG's first two scoring drives covered 58 yards on nine plays and 63 yards on 14 plays. The next two, after short punts, were 45 on three plays and 30 on four plays. The only second-half score covered 77 yards on nine plays.

"The line did an excellent job," Irwin said. "Heck on most of my runs I was 10 or 15 yards downfield before I was touched. The holes were huge."

BG coach Justin Wheeler praised the play of Irwin, who took over quarterback duties following an injury to Brandon Chadbourn a couple weeks ago.

"He's a great kid, a great player and a great leader," Wheeler said of Irwin. "He's got great vision and is like an extra coach on the field.

"We played well offensively," Wheeler said. "We've been getting better each week. It shouldn't matter who we play, we want to get better each week.

"Both sides of the ball did a good job tonight."

The Devils' running game was stopped cold [minus 8 yards on 23 carries], but sophomore QB Will Seymour hit 8-of-14 passes for 89 yards.

"Our two defensive ends - Nick Little and Nick Ceschini - do a great job," Wheeler said. "They have speed and power. It's difficult to block them one-on-one.

"Little had a great game tonight," Wheeler said. "He had a great week of practice and it showed tonight."

Little, who seemed to be in the Devils' backfield all night, was happy with the shutout.

"That's the main goal for our defense," Little said of the shutout. "We practice discipline and know our assignments."
