FLINTON - It wasn't a surprise that Glendale paid a little bit of a price for its 29-13, Inter-County Conference Silver Division victory over archrival Moshannon Valley Friday night on the Dr. Roy F. Baker Memorial Athletic Field.
The two schools are within a short drive of one another, and each circles the game with the other as the biggest on their yearly football calendars.
It's been that way for years.

Glendale’s Damon Braniff looks for yardage against Moshannon?Valley.
"You never want to be on the bottom end of this one,'' first-year Glendale head coach Matt Irvine smiled after watching his team improve to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the division.
Thanks to an inspired first half, Glendale wasn't. The Vikings got 114 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns from bullish senior running back Damon Braniff, and a 65-yard scoring run from another senior standout, flanker Doug Twigg, who wound up with 103 yards rushing on just five carries.
But Braniff missed a good portion of the second half after tweaking an ankle during a run up the middle early in the third quarter. He returned late in the third quarter, and finished the game.
Twigg wasn't so fortunate. He took a knee in the right quadriceps while playing on special teams in the third quarter, and missed the rest of the game.
"It's just really tight,'' Twigg said of his leg after the game. "It will be good for next week.''
Led by Braniff, Glendale jumped out to a 23-7 halftime lead and held on against Moshannon Valley (2-2 division, 4-3 overall).
Braniff's 3-yard touchdown run 2:53 into the game capped a 56-yard drive that Twigg highlighted with a 33-yard dash up the middle.
After sophomore defensive end Shea O'Donnell recovered a Mo Valley fumble at the Black Knights' 19, Braniff ripped off a 16-yard touchdown run with 4:04 left in the first quarter to give Glendale a 14-0 lead.
The Vikings' seniors were playing their last regular-season home game, and that, coupled with the incentive of playing their top rivals, gave Glendale plenty of motivation.
"We had a good week of practice, and I could tell in the locker room that our players were ready to play,'' Irvine said. "It's Senior Night, and it's the Mo Valley game. Our players were ready to go.''
Mo Valley converted a Jake Ludwig fumble recovery at the Glendale 7 into an eventual 2-yard touchdown run by senior halfback Caleb Campbell on the first play of the second quarter, but Glendale regained the upper hand quickly.
With Ludwig in punt formation in the Mo Valley and 7:27 remaining before halftime, he was forced to run out of the end zone with a high snap from center that produced a Glendale safety and a 16-7 Vikings' lead.
Braniff's 18-yard touchdown run with 4:44 left in the half came after an outstanding effort in which he swept the left side, juking away from one defender and bowling over another at the goal line.
"He really stepped it up,'' Irvine said of Braniff. "He went down with an injury for awhile, but he fought hard and wanted it tonight.''
Mo Valley coach Mike Keith noticed Glendale's inspired play.
"They played a good football game,'' he said. "They got a lot of momentum to start off, and they never let up. They played very inspired football.''
The teams traded third-quarter touchdowns. Twigg took a pitch from senior quarterback Gary Witherow and ran 65 yards down the left side for Glendale's score with 5:43 left in the third quarter.
"I got outside at first, then saw an inside lane and cut back,'' Twigg said.
Twigg was hurt on the ensuing kickoff. On Mo Valley's next possession, senior quarterback Tanner Dipko lofted a 58-yard touchdown pass down the middle to senior end James Stodart.
"I couldn't be prouder of our kids tonight,'' Irvine said.
Game notes: Witherow had an interception and Chris Wilson recovered a fumble for Glendale, which visits Juniata Valley next Friday night ... Mo Valley hosts Williamsburg next Friday.
