Kephart keys Mustangs past rival Windber

WINDBER - Caleb Kephart was a man on a mission Friday night at Windber Stadium.

Then again, the entire Portage rushing attack showed no mercy.

The 5-foot-8, 155 pound sophomore running back had 257 total yards and four touchdowns in the Mustangs' 32-0 blowout win at Windber in the storied WestPAC rivalry.

"We just had an overall great game," Portage coach Gary Gouse said. "We really dominated, especially in the second half. I'm really proud of the kids tonight."

"It's great," Kephart said of the shutout. "It's a big rivalry game. We weren't picked to win this game, but we came out and won. It's great."

Kephart ran the ball for 226 yards on 13 carries and had rushing touchdowns of 24, 65 and 27 yards.

And if that wasn't enough of an individual effort, he also added one reception - off of a tipped screen pass - that was good for a 31-yard score.

"Our line blocked tremendously," Kephart said. "I just blew through the hole every time."

"He's an explosive athlete," Gouse said of Kephart. "He has great speed. The wings blocked well, our guards pulled and led the play and that was good, too, but I liked how we hit people tonight. We really went after it."

The Portage defense showed up to play, too.

Windber (5-2, 5-1 WestPAC) got into the redzone three times - and got within three yards on two other possessions - and had nothing to show for it. The Ramblers were 1-for-4 on fourth down conversions, missed a 25-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter, failed to earn a first down in the third quarter and were shut out at home.

Windber gained only 133 yards on the ground - a far cry from its 233-yard average through six games - and had only 155 total yards.

"The defense played one heckuva football game," Gouse said. "I'm so proud of our defense. We played a very disciplined football game tonight. Every kid that played defense did what they were taught to do."

"We had two deep drives in the first half, and there were a couple points that we didn't get and that kind of changed momentum," Windber coach Matt Grohal said. "We were absolutely deflated at halftime and played with no emotion in the second half."

The Mustangs (6-1, 6-1), however, had no trouble moving the ball as they racked up 416 rushing yards.

Luke Dividock broke the century mark on his last carry late in the fourth quarter, a 25-yard pick up that gave him 117 yards on 14 touches.

He scored on a 20-yard run in the third quarter.

"We did some things that were really nice," Gouse said. "Once we got the edge, we were going. Once we got in a rhythm of what we knew we had, we just stayed with it."

"They ran the fullback trap and buck sweep and we practiced it 200 times this week with every look possible," Grohal said, "and we just could not stop it. They just kept running it and running it. We couldn't stop it."

Portage got most of its yards on big plays, mainly in the second half. The Mustangs gained 18 or more yards on 10 plays, effectively showing its dominance at the line of scrimmage.

"They controlled the line of scrimmage in both halves," Grohal said. "The better team won tonight."

Portage puts its five-game winning streak on the line next week when it hosts Conemaugh Township. Windber travels to Ferndale.
