HOLLIDAYSBURG - For the first time in school history, the Central Cambria golf team is headed to the PIAA Class AA Tournament.
The Red Devils qualified for states, thanks to their victory over Conemaugh Township on Friday at the Scotch Valley Country Club at the PIAA sub-regional event. Coach Tom Aurandt's club totaled a 335 while Conemaugh Township, the District 5 champion, finished with a 356.
Central Cambria will now compete with 11 other teams from across the state on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Heritage Hills Golf Course in York for a chance to win a gold medal. And if it's nicer weather than it was Friday morning, Aurandt will feel pretty good about his team's chances.
"The conditions were really rough [Friday morning]," Aurandt said. "It was cold, wet, rainy ... it didn't clear up until about 2 p.m. and we only had about a half hour to play. They didn't play as well as they did at districts [earlier in the week], but they played well enough."
Max Kirsch led Central Cambria with a 78, followed by Sam Stevens with an 83, Dom Stevens with an 85 and Jeremy Eckenrode with an 89. Conemaugh Township's best, Christian Yoder, could only muster an 85, which would have been third for the District 6 champs.
"We played three rounds in four days, which was quite a bit for our guys," Aurandt said. "Our guys were pretty tired, but they hung in there. They did well."
