CH’s Spaid places third at districts

October 12, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

STATE COLLEGE - It wasn't a great second day for Cambria Heights' Morgan Spaid in the District 6 Class AA girls golf championships at the Penn State White Course, but her final-round performance on Thursday was good enough to not end her season.

Spaid outlasted Penn Cambria's Madison Krug - for the third and final qualifying position in next week's regional - in a playoff that lasted one hole after the pair ended the tournament with matching 189s.

St. Joseph's Kinsley Bonfilio (171) won the individual title, while Bishop McCort's Kayla Orr (178) finished second.

"I was very surprised because today I did not do very well," said Spaid, who admitted she was nearly ready to withdraw from the tournament because of her second-day struggles. She had a 100 Thursday after Wednesday's 89.

"A lot of my drives did not go straight and I was getting really frustrated. I pulled it together, and it turned out OK."

The one-day PIAA Western Regional will be played on Monday at Tom's Run in Blairsville, where Spaid will not only face Bonfilio and Orr again, but will compete against some of the state's best female golfers.

"I was very happy about [qualifying], but I'm nervous to see what happens [at regionals]."

Krug had the same collapse on Thursday, shooting a 101 after her 88 in the first round.

Fittingly, the two were paired for the final round.

"I played with her all day," Spaid said. "We got to be pretty good friends. We were pretty even the whole day. It was a bittersweet [to have to play her in a playoff]."

Despite not advancing to next week's Class AAA regional, Hollidaysburg's Marissa Rosensteel (fourth, 176) and Quincy Gildea (sixth, 188) shot well enough to earn medalist honors.

State College's Jessalyn Holdcroft secured the lone qualifying spot with her individual title. She was one of two golfers in the tournament to shoot a round in the 70s with her 79 on Thursday, and led the entire field with a two-day total of 163.

Bellefonte's Alyssa Sinclair - who shot a 78 on Wednesday, but an 89 on Thursday - was second, four strokes back.

State College (711) won the team championship by 77 strokes over Bellefonte. Hollidaysburg (804) finished in third.

Bishop McCort (842) won the Class AA team title by 80 strokes over Forest Hills.
