BEDFORD - For the second year in a row, Maria Snyder can call herself a District 5 champion.

The senior from Northern Bedford won the District 5 tennis championship on Tuesday at Bedford High School, thanks to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Windber's Catie McClain in the finals.

"I was happy with how I played. I thought I played pretty well," said Snyder, who beat Cheyanne Feathers from Windber in the finals last year. "I think I had more confidence this year. I was more relaxed and I think I was able to hit the shots that wanted to hit during more crucial points in the match."

Northern Bedford does not have a tennis program so Snyder, who runs cross country in the fall for the Panthers, cannot play in real competition until the postseason, which began on Monday. That was when she was able to see her finals competition, McClain, in action.

"I got to see what her serve was like, the pace of her ball," Snyder said. "She played very well. She hit some nice shots."

Snyder will begin state competition play on Friday, Nov. 2, in Hershey.
