Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti was named the national Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation on Sunday.
Mauti spearheaded a superb defensive effort in the Nittany Lions' 35-7 win at Illinois by intercepting two passes and returned one of those 99 yards before getting tackled at the 1. Mauti also had six tackles and leads PSU with 48 through five games.
Mauti is a candidate for the Bednarik Award, given to the nation's best player, and for the Butkus Award, which goes to the top linebacker.
West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who threw for 656 yards and eight touchdowns against Baylor, won the Walter Camp offensive award for the week.
