It would have been interesting if a Pittsburgh Pirates batter would have tried to bunt for a hit while Cincinnati's Homer Bailey was no-hitting them on Friday night.
Bunting to break up a no-hitter is usually considered bad form, but it would have been acceptable in this case. The Pirates were down 1-0. They needed to get someone on base, and anything is fair under those circumstances.
How often does it happen that a pitcher who's just had a no-hitter broken up also loses his concentration and runs into trouble?
There's no guarantee it would have worked. The Reds have superior fielders at the corners, Scott Rolen at third base and Joey Votto on first.
But it would have been worth a try.
It took two weeks to get both sides back to the bargaining table in the NHL labor dispute.
Even then, they didn't talk about economic issues.
Translation: Don't count on seeing the Penguins' scheduled season opener on Oct. 12.
West Virginia made its Big 12 debut Saturday by beating Baylor 70-63.
A few impressions from that result:
n How does a team score 63 points and lose?
n Did anyone ever chant, "Dee-fense?"
n Is the WVU scoreboard equipped to display triple digits if necessary?
West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith passed for 656 yards. To offer some perspective on that figure, Terry Bradshaw once passed for 785 yards.
That wasn't in a game, though. That was Bradshaw's yardage total from 1974, the Steelers' first Super Bowl season. In fairness, Bradshaw only appeared in 12 games that season. Joe Gilliam began the year as the Steelers' starting quarterback.
Keep in mind that Baylor wasn't some sacrificial victim invited to be cannon fodder in exchange for a payday. The Bears came into the game ranked No. 25.
How often is it that a team scores 70 points and isn't accused of running up the score? West Virginia needed every one of those points to stay undefeated.
It might have been a bad game for ancillary revenue, though. Anyone who stepped away to buy a drink or hot dog probably missed a couple of touchdowns.
