John F. Treese, 73, Altoona, died Monday at Altoona Regional after a brief illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late John D. and Rose (Egan) Treese. He married Carole A. Porta on Sept. 16, 1961.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Patrick J. (Kelly) of Altoona; three grandchildren: Michael, Kaylin and Alexis; and a sister, Jean Bettwy (Joe) of Altoona.

He was preceded in death by a half brother, Don Kennedy.

John was a 1957 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School. He attended Penn State University and Delaware University for administrative and supervisory courses in police management. He was employed with the Altoona Police Department for 40 years and retired in 2001 as police chief, serving from 1997-2001.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1957-60 with NATO under the commander of the 2nd Naval Fleet touring Europe, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

John was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and altar server and volunteered at the food pantry. He also belonged to the Swiss Rifle Club and Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and Notre Dame athletics, and he especially enjoyed watching his grandson compete in various sports and his granddaughters perform on the stage.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 511 20th St., Altoona, PA 16602.
