UNIVERSITY PARK - Following are the highlights and lowlights from Penn State's 24-13 victory over Temple on Saturday at Beaver Stadium:
Play of the game: On fourth-and-5 from the Temple 41 late in the first quarter, Matt McGloin floated a ball over an Owls' defender to a leaping Allen Robinson, who scored from 41 yards out to give Penn State a 7-0 lead.
Offensive player of the game: McGloin completed 24-of-36 for a career-high 318 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was not sacked. He also scored a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Defensive player of the game: Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti made a team-high nine tackles. He also forced a fumble and broke up a pass.
Most telling statistic: The Nittany Lions were penalized nine times for 100 yards.
Hidden statistic: PSU running backs Zach Zwinak (18-94) and Michael Zordich (15-75) combined to average 5.1 yards on 33 carries.
Best run: Jesse Della Valle found daylight and kept his balance during a 29-yard punt return that jump-started the Lions' first touchdown drive.
Best pass: See play of the game.
Worst pass: Temple quarterback Chris Coyer, on second-and-4 from the PSU 7, had tight end Cody Booth wide open in the end zone on a throwback attempt in the second quarter but overshot him, forcing the Owls to settle for a field goal (7-3).
Best catch: Lion punt returner Evan Lewis backpedaled and made an over-the-shoulder grab of a booming, 58-yard punt by Temple's Brandon McManus in the first quarter, preserving early field position.
Catch it, will ya: Brandon Moseby-Felder's deflection of a McGloin pass in the second quarter resulted in a Temple interception by Tavon Young at the Owls' 10 with the Lions up 7-3 and threatening to make it a two-score game.
Hold it, won't ya: Penn State did not fumble.
Best block: Garry Gilliam, one of the Nits' tight ends, had a solid crackback in the first quarter.
Best tackle: Temple safety Vaughn Carraway slammed down a leaping Zordich in a spectacular play in front of the Penn State bench in the second quarter.
Best hit: Della Valle decked Temple punt returner Matt Brown at the PSU sidelines in the third quarter. The officials - incorrectly - penalized Della Valle for an out-of-bounds hit because Brown was still in bounds.
Best kick: See best catch.
Worst kick: McManus shanked a 15-yard punt in the fourth quarter.
Worst penalty: Penn State offered a smorgasbord, but let's go with Lion tight end Matt Lehman, whose hold in the first quarter wiped out a 25-yard gain to Alex Kenney to the Temple 3. Replays showed Kenney already had the edge before the hold was committed.
Best call: With Temple facing third-and-4 from the PSU 7, Nit defensive coordinator Ted Roof ordered up a blitz, and Mike Hull shot through and dumped Coyer for an 8-yard loss.
Worst call: Didn't understand Temple coach Steve Addazio, down 14-3, punting on fourth-and-5 from PSU 43 in the third quarter.
Best effort: Zordich accounted for 114 yards of total offense - 75 rushing and another 39 on four receptions.
Unsung hero(es): Penn State's assistant coaches alerted Bill O'Brien to quickly call timeout late in the first half, which gave the offense, working with a short field, enough time (48 seconds) to take a 14-3 lead.
