Frances S. Karns

Frances S. Karns, 84, formerly of Indiana, Pa., and Pittsburgh, died Saturday in Girard.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Howard and Mary L. (Appleman) Clapper. She married the Rev. William L. Karns on Aug. 17, 1946, at Fort McClellan, Ala., and he died in 2003, having shared 57 years of marriage.
Surviving are three daughters: Sharyl Sumner, Geri Kuremsky and Gwenn Warner; a son, William H.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dot Gardner.
Frances had been employed in the offices of Edinboro and Indiana State Colleges and retired as an administrator from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was a member of Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church, Pittsburgh.
Frances enjoyed golfing, knitting, painting, exercising, working puzzles, playing the organ, doing volunteer work, crocheting and sewing, having made many quilts.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Sorge Funeral Home Inc., Hollidaysburg, by Gordon Trimmer. Interment will be at New Canoe Creek Cemetery.
