JOHNSTOWN - According to Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis, Highlanders senior Donnie Contorchick isn't a man of many words.
One thing he is, though, is a man of many plays.
Contorchick was a major factor on both sides of the ball as he helped lead Cambria Heights to a 36-18 victory over Westmont Hilltop in a rare Monday afternoon Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference intersectional game at Price Field.
The contest was moved from Saturday due to inclement weather.
"I think today was his day. Donnie made big plays," Lewis said. "He's a man of few words, but he's one of our guys that does a lot of the stuff that goes unnoticed."
His involvement Monday was quite the opposite.
The 6-foot-2, 200 pound running back and defensive back made a number of plays including a 21-yard touchdown run and a fourth down conversion run on offense, and a fumble recovery, a huge fourth down stop and half of a sack on defense.
Contorchick ran the ball seven times for 50 yards and caught a pass for 27 yards.
"On defense, I could have done a lot better. I was tired," Contorchick said. "On offense, there were a lot of plays up the middle. You've just got to put your head down and hit."
But Contorchick's offensive effort was just a fraction of Cambria Heights' 345 yards.
Tyler Crawford had 22 carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns, quarterback Nathan Bearer was 2-for-6 for 41 yards passing and had 34 yards on five carries and two rushing touchdowns, and Ben Myers added 47 yards on eight touches and hauled in a pass for 14 yards.
In all, the Highlanders (1-1) gained 304 yards on the ground.
"Any time you have a rushing attack like we did today, you credit the whole offensive line," Lewis said.
"When we're at our best, a lot of guys are carrying the load. We try not to be one-dimensional and have teams be able to stop one guy. Everybody kind of does their part and does their share."
Cambria Heights jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead on its first drive after Bearer capped off the 70-yard, 4:13 series with a 10-yard score and ran for the conversion.
The Hilltoppers (0-2) were able to answer on defense by forcing a safety, and then Liam Moran found Sam Curry for a 10-yard score to put them ahead, 9-8, as time expired in the first quarter.
Curry had four catches for 19 yards and had 128 yards rushing.
"I thought it was big for us to get that safety early," Westmont Hilltop coach Pat Barron said. "It was a good spark for us. We talked about getting a spark all week to start that fire."
But it didn't last long.
The Highlanders responded with a quick 2:17 drive to open the second quarter - highlighted by bookend Contorchick runs - and never looked back.
"That's a tough Westmont team," Lewis said. "You can tell the difference between Week 1 and Week 2. I thought we could have come out with a little more intensity. But credit them - they did a nice job keeping us off balance defensively."
The only thing Cambria Heights struggled to do was limit its penalties.
The Highlanders were flagged 12 times for 112 yards.
"We need to eliminate the penalties," Lewis said. "The penalties were a killer today. You want to feel good about this game, and we do because it's a win, but the one negative was obviously the penalties."
Cambria Heights travels to Bishop Guilfoyle (1-1), and Westmont Hilltop travels to Johnstown (0-2) for LHAC sectional games after the short week.
Both contests are Friday night.
