HOLLIDAYSBURG - Rain and wind produced some of the highest scoring in Greater Altoona history as the first round of competition was completed Saturday at Scotch Valley Country Club.
Despite heavy rain that caused a mid-round, 30-minute delay, Sinking Valley's Artie Fink Jr. fired a 2-under par score of 70. He will take a six-shot lead into today's round over Scotch Valley's David DeGol Jr. and Park Hills' Todd Homan. Jordan Kirsch, also from Park Hills, was alone in fourth place after a score of 77.
On the ladies' side, Scotch Valley's Michelle Day leads the field with a 79. Sinking Valley's Suz Price is five strokes back after an 84. Gwen Paden and Deb Long, both from Iron Masters, will enter today's play in third place after shooting 86s.
In team competition (where the three best scores are counted each day), the Sinking Valley men finished Saturday nine shots clear of Park Hills - with a score of 226. The Iron Masters ladies will carry a slim three-stroke lead over Summit into today's play after shooting a total of 262.
The final round will be held today at Sinking Valley Country Club.
