THREE SPRINGS - Whether it was on offense or defense, Southern Huntingdon had no answers Friday night.
Williamsburg just played that well.
And when the thunderstorms started to roll into the area and halted the start of the third quarter, Rockets coach Ryan Garlock had the option of calling it a complete game.
Instead, the two teams will play the second half of their Inter-County Conference interdivisional game Monday night at 6 p.m. with the Blue Pirates leading, 24-0.
"We had the choice of just calling the game official or playing, but we're young - we need all the game experience we can get," Garlock said. "It just makes it tough to get ready for next Friday, but I'd rather finish it and get the game experience. That's better than any practice."
Williamsburg established its presence on both sides of the ball almost immediately.
It only took six plays for the Blue Pirates to score on its second possession of the game. Each of the 51 yards on the 1:26 drive were picked up on the ground, capped by Alan Shanholtz's 3-yard plunge.
Williamsburg (0-1) forced Southern Huntingdon to go three and out on each of its first three possessions, and after the third, they opened the flood gates.
Quarterback Austin McMonagle connected with Mike Biddle - who found a seam down the middle of the field - for a 25-yard score, Shanholtz ran 8 yards for his second touchdown and Biddle added a 4-yard TD one play after setting up the score with a 37-yard scamper.
"After that first series, our offense started really coming together," Williamsburg coach Bob Hearn said. "We just got on a roll. We were able to run to the outside.
"We had some timely throws. Austin made two nice reads on drives where we needed to have a big play."
McMonagle was 2-for-4 for 51 yards. Biddle had five carries for 62 yards, Shanholtz ran the ball 12 times for 60 yards, and Jed Dishong had 58 yards on eight carries.
The Blue Pirates had 190 yards rushing on 33 touches giving them 241 of total offense for the half.
But Hearn is essentially making his team wipe the slate clean.
"You come back Monday like you're starting another game," he said. "You have to approach it that way. Fortunately, we're going to be up some points to begin, but we really need to treat it like it's a new game."
The Williamsburg defense showed up to play, too.
Through nearly 20 minutes, the Blue Pirates held the Rockets (0-1) to one yard of offense on 10 plays.
But on the 11th play, Scott Carbaugh broke free for a 28-yard run for Southern's first first down. Carbaugh picked up the team's second first down on a nearly meaningless 17-yard dash to end the second quarter.
Southern Huntingdon finished the half with 44 total yards.
"I thought our defense played really well in the first half," Hearn said. "We stepped up and got the ball back for our offense. We didn't give up much field position."
"We didn't have an answer for them offensively or defensively," Garlock said. "The couple days off will hopefully help us a little bit. We'll make some adjustments and try to get something positive out of this."
