Worthing passes Bellwood to win

BELLWOOD - Moshannon Valley held Bellwood-Antis to just 25 yards rushing in the first half of their contest at Memorial Stadium.

That put Blue Devil quarterback Seth Worthing into the spotlight, and he shined brighter than the lightning that delayed the a game an hour in a 35-14 Bellwood victory.

Worthing finished 8-for-10 with three touchdown passes and 156 yards as the Blue Devils scored the first 35 points of the game.

"Moshannon Valley is big, and they take up a lot of space in the middle," Bellwood-Antis coach John Hayes said. "It's hard to run on them, and they were getting some penetration. Fortunately, Seth made some big plays. We hope he'll make those kind of plays all year."

No play was bigger than when Worthing found his brother, Cameron, wide open for a 59-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter. Seth Worthing connected with Casey Gray on a 14-yard score and Jerame Parson on a 23-yard touchdown later in the game.

"I don't know if I passed the ball too well," Seth Worthing said. "I got it to where it needed to be, but it didn't look too pretty. As long as it gets the job done, though, I'm happy with it."

With Bellwood leading, 14-0, and threatening to score again, it appeared the Black Knights got their first break of the game. Gray caught a pass and ran for a first down to the Mo Valley 9-yard line but lost a fumble.

Two snaps later, the Blue Devils were rolling again when a shotgun snap went over Moshannon Valley quarterback Tanner Dipko's head. The QB fell on the ball for a safety. Gray followed that by returning the kickoff 65 yards for a score, and the game was essentially over.

"Big plays. You can't make mistakes like we made against a team like Bellwood and expect to win," Moshannon Valley coach Mike Keith said. "They are just too well coached."

The Black Knights showed a little bit of what they are capable of offensively in the fourth quarter when Dipko found Justin Kitko on a 28-yard touchdown pass, and Jake Ludwig rushed for an 8-yard score.

"I was proud of the way all of our guys played," Keith said. "Honestly, we just made some mistakes that gave them big plays, and that was the game. We clean up the mistakes, and this is an even game."

Bellwood-Antis (2-0) will travel to West Branch next Friday, and Moshannon Valley (1-1) will try to rebound at home against Tussey Mountain.

"We knew how dangerous Mo Valley can be," Hayes said. "When you play a team with the offense they have, if you make a mistake you can be in trouble. We preached to them that this was a red alert, and we couldn't have a let-down coming off a big win against Tyrone.

"We played pretty good defense, especially run defense. That helped us a lot."
