NEW PARIS - The lightning and storms that played havoc with the area's high school football schedule only affected Chestnut Ridge momentarily - other than a start time of 8:45 p.m. Visiting Carrick, of the Pittsbugh City League, got on the board first, recovering its own fumble in the end zone late in the first quarter.
The Lions (1-1) quickly rebounded, however, reeling off 35 unanswered points and racking up 350 yards on the ground on their way to a 35-12 victory at home at Dr. Giovacchini Stadium.
The Ridge rushing attack was led by quarterback Beau Bosch, who scored twice and gained 122 yards on 15 carries, and running back Jacob Mock, who tallied 100 yards and two touchdowns.
"We're an option team, so that's what we hope happens," Lions coach Max Shoemaker said. "We never got to that point last week [in the team's season-opening 51-20 loss to Central]. The kids made some improvement and I told them that the biggest difference between last week and this week was our aggressiveness."
The Ridge defense stepped up big, as well. After the Raiders connected on a series of long passes by sophomore quarterback Ahmari Camp (8-for-22 for 120 yards) in the first half, the Lions clamped down. Junior linebacker Brandon Lasure was a constant presence in the Carrick backfield, notching two sacks and several tackles for loss. Sophomore cornerback Noah Osman also came up big, grabbing a pair of interceptions.
"We pursued well and our front eight played particularly well," Shoemaker said. "That's something we can certainly build from. We gave up a couple of passes ... a lot of the kids in the secondary are young and they're going through and getting game experience."
For Ridge, the win should take a little of the sting out of last week's loss and Shoemaker hopes his team will build on their success next week, when it visits Berks Catholic in Reading.
"We're young and we have good senior leadership, but we're hoping that the younger kids develop," he said. "Not many of our kids have game experience. I think the future looks bright and the ceiling is high because we have the opportunity to show a lot of improvement as the season goes on."
