Frederick W. Ickes, 78, Altoona, went to be with the Lord Monday at Altoona Regional after a very brief illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late William and Mary (Dumbeck) Ickes. He married Joan C. Salyards in Altoona, and she died Jan. 19, 2008, having shared 50 years of marriage.
Surviving are a son, Freddie and partner, Brenda Martin; two grandchildren: John McGinley and Tammie Thompson; two great-grandchildren: Ashley and Jackie; three great-great-grandchildren: Star, Skyla and Haylee; a brother, Bernie and wife, Patti; and two sisters: Loretta Stoltz and husband, Joe, and Janet Martz.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sue Thompson; and a sister, Betty Miller.
Fred worked for Blair Clay Products for 45 years and DelGrosso Foods for 20 years. He was a member of the Concordia Society of Altoona.
Fred's ornery grin and witty humor will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him. He always spoke what he thought. He enjoyed time with his family, long walks, casinos and especially his bingo nights.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at Santella Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, by Pastor Beckie Miller-Zeek. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
