Leroy E. Helsel, 67, Altoona, died unexpectedly Sunday morning at his home.
He was born in Johnstown, son of the late John and Margaret (Helsel) Helsel. He married Martha Walker on May 20, 1967, in Hooversville and shared 45 years of marriage.
Surviving are his wife; two sons: Thomas M. (Marie) of Seven Fields and John H. of Pittston; four grandchildren: Stephen, Alexis, Parker and Chelsea; a brother, John of Boiling Spring; a sister, Margaret Vincent of Altoona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Cassie Leigh; a sister, Thelma Evans; and a brother, Merle.
Leroy was a veteran of the Vietnam era, having served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years. He retired from the Van Zandt VA Medical Center after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Bavarian Aid Society and Newburg Fire Company. He was a fan of all sports and especially enjoyed his family and friends.
Friends will be received from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Grace Family Bible Church, Maple Hollow, Duncansville, immediately followed by a service at the church to honor Leroy.
