ERIE - The Curve franchise recorded a milestone Saturday when infielder Brock Holt became the 100th alum to reach the major leagues in the team's 14 seasons.
Holt was called up by the Pirates after torching the pitching at Triple-A Indianapolis, hitting .432 in 24 games. There have been 426 players in Curve history, and 23.5 percent of them have gone on to play in the big leagues.
Holt had been with the Curve all season before going to Triple-A, and his .322 average for Altoona has him in position to win the Eastern League batting title with two games to go.
Holt has a slim lead over Reading's Darin Ruf, who is at .319. Ruf is trying to win the EL triple crown as he already leads the home run (38) and RBI (103) races.
Holt's former team clawed its way back to .500 Saturday night as the Curve beat Erie, 4-1, at Jerry Uht Park. Altoona has won 11 of 14 to pull its record even at 70-70 with two games left.
Stefan Welch led off the sixth inning with a home run to give the Curve a 2-1 lead. Left fielder Andy Vasquez, who was just called up from high-A Bradenton, doubled home Jeremy Farrell and scored on an error for a 4-1 cushion.
Kyle Kaminska (1-0), also just called back up from Bradenton, gave up just one run in six innings for the Curve. He took the roster spot of lefty Kris Johnson, who was promoted to Indianapolis.
Jeff Inman pitched the ninth for his third save. Starter Jared Gayhart (1-6) took the loss for Erie, which has the EL's worst record at 57-82.
Former Curve pitcher Gerrit Cole made his Triple-A debut Saturday night at Indy. He allowed three runs in the first inning but followed with five shutout frames and earned the win as the Indians rallied past Toledo.
