Marauders start 2012 season with a bang

Coming off of a 1-8 season in 2011, the Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic football team was looking to open the season well against Bedford on Saturday night at a balmy Mansion Park.

The Marauders did more than that. They dominated in all phases of the game.

BG avenged last season's 31-0 loss to the Bisons thanks to sophomore quarterback Brandon Chadbourn running for 166 yards, including an 83-yard touchdown run, throwing for another TD, tailback Cody Rossman scoring three times and the defense earning a 42-0 mercy-rule win.

"Little different than last year," BG coach Justin Wheeler said. "Bedford is a tough team. They had some injuries, and their kids battled to the end. For us, we wanted to come out and play hard, wanted to play fast and wanted to finish. We did all three things tonight."

"It certainly was not a good start," Bedford coach Kevin Steele said. "It wasn't what we anticipated. They have a nice team. They're much improved from last year. They were the more aggressive team. They were the more physical. They made made more plays and took care of the football."

BG began its offensive onslaught by getting the ball at the Bedford 28 after a 24-yard punt. Two plays later, Rossman scored on a 4-yard run.

The Marauders, who amassed 388 yards and used 10 players to run the ball, scored on all but three of its possessions and only punted once. Rossman scored the second TD on a 1-yard run on a series in which Bedford suffered back-to-back penalties (pass interference and offsides).

It was the first of three second-quarter touchdowns. The second came when Chadbourn raced 83 yards for a score with 6:57 left in the half. Chadbourn had 160 yards in the first half.

"He showed great vision," Wheeler said, "and more than anything, I think he was surprised at how open the field was. Our offensive line really got into their blocks and stayed on their guys."

Chadbourn, who threw for 70 yards, showed he could pass to when he found converted QB Pat Irwin for a 24-yard scoring strike with 1:37 left in the half.

"He's had a great camp," Wheeler said of Chadbourn. "He's our starting quarterback just because of the big-play possibilities he gives us. We think that makes us a better football team. You could see what Pat Irwin can do at wide receiver."

"We knew he was a good athlete coming in," Steele said. "Certainly that was a concern we tried to emphasize during the week, but there are certain things you can't mimick in practice because he's such a good athlete."

Rossman scored from a yard out on the first series of the second half, and Jared Verba's PAT made it a mercy-rule game. Ian Luther added a 2-yard run in the fourth.

The BG defense, meanwhile, never allowed the Bisons to get closer than the Marauder 42, limited them to 103 yards and recovered two fumbles.

"Defensively, we did a great job," Wheeler said. "The defensive coaches really had a great gameplan."

Steele had converted split end Isaac Kline starting at QB in place of Aaron Henry, who was in street clothes with his left arm in a sling.

"I'm not making excuses," Steele said. "We have to go back to work on Monday and work a lot harder. We did not have a good week of practice, and there's an obvious correlation between practice and what happens here on Friday and Saturday night."

Notes: BG's Father Crossman was knocked down on the sideline on a running play in the third quarter, but he was back on his feet after a short time on the bench. ... BG led in first downs, 19-6. ... BG's only punt was a 42-yard boot by Dan Baughman on its last series.
