PORTAGE - A Portage man was arrested Thursday after a 9-year-old girl allegedly told police that he sexually assaulted her numerous times over a three-year span.

Police arrested Mark Wayne Greenawalt, 49, of 933 Sonman Ave. and charged him with rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors.

During an interview, the girl described multiple sexual assaults, court documents state. The interview was conducted with police, officials from the Children's Advocacy Center in Indiana, Cambria County Children and Youth Services and Cambria County Assistant District Attorney Beth Bolton Penna.

The girl told police Greenawalt performed multiple sex acts on her and fondled her over the course of three years, Greenawalt's arrest papers state. The child said she could not remember when the alleged assaults first began.

After his arrest, Greenawalt admitted to touching and fondling the child on numerous occasions, Bolton Penna said.

The girl and her mother reported the alleged assaults to Portage Borough police on Monday, according to court documents. Greenawalt is a friend of the family, Bolton Penna said.

Greenawalt was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael Zungali and incarcerated in Cambria County Prison on 10 percent of $50,000 cash bail.

His preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Galen Decort.
