GACTC offers cooking classes

August 29, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

Beginning in September and running through December, area residents interested in learning new cooking skills will have an opportunity to learn from chef instructors at the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center.

GACTC is bringing back its series of one-night cooking classes that are open to the public. "Some of the best culinary instructors in the state are right here at the GACTC," said Leanne Sidney, coordinator of continuing education at GACTC. "Our chef instructors have put together a wide variety of classes that should appeal to any palate."

Sidney also said, "Anyone can register for as many classes as they would like, you can take just one or all of them. Each class will be presented on specific evenings beginning Sept. 19 and running through Dec. 11." Sidney pointed out that a nominal fee of $40 will be charged for each class to cover the costs of supplies and food items. Each class will feature a recipe handout, chef demo, hands-on instruction for students and tasting of final products. Students are urged to wear proper footwear and take an apron.

Sidney also emphasized that class size is limited, so interested persons should sign up early. More information is available at www.gactc.edu or by calling the GACTC Office of Continuing Education at 941-TECH.

Following is a listing of the classes:

Vegetarian - Experience the benefits of a plant-based diet as we prepare various recipes without meat.

Gluten-Free Desserts - An assortment of decadent desserts for everyone from the health conscious to the curious baker.

Making Jams - Making jam is fun and a wonderful way to preserve the fruits of summer.

Holiday Cookies - Swedish Spritz, No-Bake Gingersnap Balls, Lemon cookies, Date Pinwheels and Chocolate Raspberry Kolacky.

Appetizers - Small plates are a great way to whet the appetite.
