Senior Trey Claar can do a lot of good things on the football field, and nobody is more aware of it than Claysburg-Kimmel coach Joe Kitt.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Claar will be the Bulldogs' full-time quarterback this year after splitting time last season between the quarterback and wideout positions. Defensively, Claar will be a three-year starter at free safety.
He's a leader on both sides of the ball for C-K.
"We actually used him some at wide receiver last year because of his athletic ability, but he's always been a solid quarterback,'' Kitt said. "He's a very smart kid, he understands our offense, and he knows what he's supposed to do with the football and he doesn't make very many mistakes, which is good.''
Along with his physical and technical ability at the quarterback position, Claar is adept at reading opposing defenses.
"Trey can really read defenses and put the ball where it needs to go,'' Kitt said.
Claar said that his experience in that area has helped him greatly.
"Reading the defense is like second nature to me because I've always played the quarterback position,'' Claar said. "Playing quarterback can be nerve-wracking because everything is on you, but the better we do as a team, the better I like the position. It's fun.''
Claar is also a quarterback of sorts in the secondary.
"He's been a big asset to us back at safety,'' Kitt said. "He pretty much sets our defense up, and puts our other guys in the right spots. He has a big responsibility. He's grown over the past three years, and he has a lot of experience there.''
Claar is also a standout pitcher on Claysburg-Kimmel's baseball team, and hopes to play baseball collegiately. This fall, however, his first priority will be to lead the C-K football program back to the District 6-A playoffs. Claysburg finished 4-6 last season, losing to Moshannon Valley, 27-18 in the first round of the playoffs.
"I think we have a solid team,'' Claar said. "Hopefully, we can make the playoffs again, and do well there.''
