Covering the bases

August 23, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

LEADING OFF: The Curve's playoff hopes are slim with just two weeks left, but they can play spoiler this weekend with Richmond in town. The Flying Squirrels are battling Bowie for the Western Division wild-card berth, and the Curve can play a role in the race with every win over Richmond.

SAFE AT FIRST: The Curve aren't out of the playoff race, but trying to catch two teams in two weeks will be very difficult. However, if they can sweep the four games against Richmond, they could be in position to catch up to the Flying Squirrels, then would have to hope for a big winning streak and/or a Bowie collapse.

STEALING SECOND: The Curve were just 6-16 in day games entering Wednesday before crushing Trenton.

ROUNDING THIRD: RHP Jason Townsend, who won in his Curve debut with 4 1/2 scoreless innings of relief Wednesday, had a stellar season at high-A Bradenton before his promotion. Townsend was 6-2 with a 2.23 ERA in 37 relief appearances.

HEADING HOME: To make room for Townsend on the roster, RHP Kris Harvey was placed on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.
