CRESSON - A portion of Route 22 was closed Wednesday morning as police investigated a single-vehicle crash that left one man dead.

Cresson Township police did not release the name of the 43-year-old driver but said the man was a local resident.

At about 9:54 a.m., a vehicle traveling on Route 22 in the eastbound lane crossed the grass median and traveled into the westbound lane. It struck a guardrail and rolled over, Cambria County 911 officials said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver was trapped inside the vehicle but freed by emergency crews from Cresson and Gallitzin volunteer fire companies, officials said.

The man was transported by ambulance to Altoona Regional Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. A medical helicopter was called but not used, 911 officials said.

Tire tracks running through the grass median and leading to a mangled section of guardrail alongside the westbound lanes were still visible at the scene Wednesday afternoon.
