People’s needs ignored

August 16, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

Recently, I attended a meeting hosted by PennDOT for the small community of East Sharpsburg.

The bridge at the lower end of the small town and the connection to Route 164 is to be removed and not replaced.

This bridge has been serving the town since early 1900, and if it was properly checked, is still safe. Sure, the old cement sides need repair. Anything with age needs upkeep.

But the smart young engineers have made the decision that affects an entire community with absolutely no concern for the rights of its residents.

This is a disgrace to see a community at the mercy of PennDOT. Where are our local representatives who we voted for? No one cares until it is time to get votes so they can keep their cushy political jobs with all the benefits.

I am appalled to see my neighbors and friends treated like they are nothing.

There are 200 people who will only have one way in and out of their small town. They need help.

It was a disgrace how the engineers completely ignored the concerns of the residents. And, no representatives, such as Jerry Stern, were there in the interest of this small community.
