Covering the bases

August 10, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

LEADING OFF: Former Curve LHP Justin Wilson threw a no-hitter in a rain shortened game for Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday. Wilson walked one batter, struck out five and threw 86 pitches over eight innings to complete the feat. Wilson was 11-8 with a 3.09 ERA for the Curve in 2010.

SAFE AT FIRST: Bowie SS Manny Machado, who went 1-for-3 against the Curve on Wednesday night, was not in the lineup on Thursday. This was because Machado - Baseball America's No. 9 ranked prospect - was called up to the majors Wednesday night.

STEALING SECOND: Machado was 4-for-9 against the Curve in the first three games of Bowie's series in Altoona. The 20-year-old hit .266 in 109 games for the Baysox and was 2-for-4 in his debut for Baltimore against Kansas City on Thursday.

ROUNDING THIRD: 1B Matt Curry hit his 10th homer of the year Thursday. Curry leads the team with 66 RBIs and joins OF Quincy Latimore as the only players on the team have at least 10 home runs.

HEADING HOME: RHP Juan Cruz made his second major league rehab start in four days for the Curve on Thursday. Cruz is in his 12th major league season, but his first with the Pirates. The 33-year-old journeyman has also spent time with the Cubs, Braves, Athletics, Diamondbacks, Royals and Rays.
