J. Stephen Piper

J. Stephen Piper, 65, Altoona, died Wednesday evening at his residence.

He was born in Duncansville, son of Janet Louise (Weise) Beauchamp and the late John "Cal" Piper. He is the stepson of the late William J. Beauchamp Sr. and Donna (Black) Piper.

He was twice married; first to Betty J. Kennedy, now wife of Ralph R. Moreno of Waipahu, Hawaii; and then to Nancy Podguski, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are children: Danette L. Piper of Altoona, Steffan S. Piper and wife, Marissa, of Palm Desert, Calif., and Travis I. Ajay of Port Orange, Fla.; stepchildren: John Ehrhart, Monica Ehrhart, Melissa Ehrhart and Robert Ehrhart; all of Norristown; and adopted daughter Serena Sambrick and husband, Rob, of Worchester; grandchildren: Ryan T. Piper, Zachary R. Piper (Amanda Chilcote) and Mikaela E. Wilt, all of Altoona, Fox Piper of Palm Desert, Calif., Kieran A. Ajay of Port Orange, Fla., Stephen Jaffe, Jeffrey Jaffe, Mathew Jaffe and Andrew Jaffe, all of Worchester, Jeffrey Ehrhart, Taylorjane Ehrhart, Devin and Amy B.; great-grandson, Elijah James Piper; siblings: William R. Beauchamp Jr. of Altoona, Barbara Martino of Altoona, James R. Beauchamp and wife, Deborah L., of Sinking Valley, David E. Beauchamp and wife, Shelby J., of Hoschton, Ga., Penny Piper-Basom of Sneeds Ferry, N.C., and Pam Piper of Olathe, Kan.

Stephen was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran attaining the rank of sergeant and served two tours of duty in Vietnam from 1965-69.

He was formerly employed by the Altoona Police Department from 1969 to 1973, and retired from the carpentry and construction fields. He had also been employed by the Jacksonville Suns, AA Baseball Team Grounds & Clubhouse from 2003 to 2005.

There will be no viewing or funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at 30 Something in Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Night Train Committee, 2020 Crawford Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.

Arrangements are by Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona.
