Barbara A. Smith, 69, The Villages, Fla., died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at The Villages Regional Hospital.
She was born in Altoona, and she moved to The Villages from Vero Beach, Fla., in 2005.
Surviving are her husband, James W. Shaffer; a brother, Edward D. (Susan J.) Smith of Vero Beach, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Barbara E. Smith of Altoona; a niece, Wendy Price of Richmond Hill, Ga.; a nephew, Brian Smith of Hollidaysburg; and two stepdaughters: Abby (Nathaniel) Fretz of Bethesda, Md., and Amanda Shaffer of Fort Pierce, Fla., and her son, Justin Shaffer of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Barbara retired from IBM in the Business Systems Division. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Celtic Club and Virginia Trace Golf League. She enjoyed golf, swimming and reading.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 1511 Buenos Aires Blvd., The Villages, Fla. A gathering of family and friends will be held immediately after the service.
