Spikes get top defense

July 22, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

UNIVERSITY PARK - Tyler Gaffney made two stellar defensive plays in the field and contributed a double in the eighth inning to give the State College Spikes some late insurance as they toppled the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-2, in front of a season-high 5,106 fans at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

A large crowd saw Gaffney sparkle with the glove early, robbing Williamsport's (11-21) Chris Serritella of a home run in the top of the first inning by leaping at the 375-foot mark of the right-center field wall and extending his glove over the fence to bring the ball back into play for the out.

In the fifth inning, Gaffney added another fine defensive effort when he made a catch in right field and fired to first base to double off Roman Quinn and end the inning.
