George M. Acker

George M. Acker, 89, of Huston Township, rural Martinsburg, died early Saturday morning at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, after a brief illness.

He was born in Clover Creek, Huston Township, son of the late William P. and Anna L. (Fisher) Acker.

Surviving are four nephews: Gregory Acker, Titus Smith, Lee Smith and Joel Smith; four nieces: the Rev. Dr. Anamae Smith Storbeck, Lottie Ebersole, Cindy Snyder and Luella Stern and their families; and a brother-in-law, Donald R. Smith.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary L. Smith, in 1976; a brother, Harold I. Acker, in 1978; and a nephew, Max D. Smith, in 2012.

Mr. Acker had attended the Martinsburg area schools, including the Morrisons Cove High School.

He was a lifelong farmer on the family's original farm tract on Clover Creek, rural Martinsburg.

George was a longtime member of Salem United Church of Christ, rural Martinsburg, where he was a former director and president of the Salem Church Cemetery Association.

He was a former member of Blair County Sheep and Wool Growers Association and Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company, Station No. 80, and a former director of Morrisons Cove Community Fair.

George was a locally, nationally and internationally known weather prognosticator/forecaster, who wrote annual newspaper articles about the upcoming year's weather.

He enjoyed gospel and bluegrass music, and socializing with his many close friends, relatives and community in general.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Salem United Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family prefers memorial contributions be given to Salem United Church of Christ or Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company.
