AKRON, Ohio -- The Curve still haven't been back to .500 in more than three months, but they're within a game of the break-even mark once again.
Altoona finally figured out a way to win at Akron on Thursday, 3-2 in 12 innings, after losing their first six games at Canal Park.
Stefan Welch reached on an error by Aeros third baseman Davis Stoneburner leading off the 12th inning, and Charlie Cutler's one-out single scored the game winner for the Curve.
Akron managed only three hits in 12 innings and had just one after the second inning, when it scored both of its runs.
Curve starter Tim Alderson gave up two runs on two hits in five innings, then Mike Colla, Jeff Inman and Logan Kensing (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings apiece. Kris Harvey worked the 12th to earn his second save.
Jose De La Torre (7-1) suffered the loss in relief for Akron.

Oscar Tejeda drove in the Curve's first two runs, on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and on a two-out single in the eighth to tie it at 2-2.

OF Adalberto Santos rejoined the Curve on Thursday after missing 2 1/2 months with a knee injury. Santos was leading the EL in hitting at .396 when he was injured April 30.
The Pirates released RHP Matt McSwain, who had been versatile for the Curve with six starts and 13 relief appearances. The 26-year-old was 4-2 with a 4.88 ERA.
OF Evan Chambers (.190 in 16 games) was sent back to high-A Bradenton to make room for Santos on the roster.
RHP Gerrit Cole was activated off the temporary inactive list, which he had been on so he could appear in the Futures Game.
