Curve fall in Akron yet again

June 10, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

From Mirror reports

AKRON, Ohio - Canal Park has been a house of horrors this season for the Curve.

For the third time this year, the Curve suffered a walk-off loss in Akron on Saturday, as Nick Weglarz hit a solo home run to right field in the 10th to win it, 2-1, for the Aeros in extra innings. The Curve are now 0-5 in Akron this year, with all five losses being one-run defeats.

In the Curve's defense, Akron has been nearly unbeatable at home this year. The team has won 11 straight home games and is 25-7 at Canal Park in 2012.

Weglarz's game-winner came off of Altoona reliever Jhonathan Ramos (2-1), and the left fielder was the first and only batter Ramos faced.

Both starting pitchers - Brandon Cumpton for Altoona and T.J. House for Akron - were dialed in, as there were nothing but zeros on the scoreboard for the first six innings.

Fact Box

Next stop

Today: Altoona at Akron, 1:05 p.m.

Pitchers: Curve RHP Shairon Martis (4-1, 2.84) vs. Aeros LHP Giovanni Soto (5-2, 4.22)

Record: 28-32

Cumpton eventually got into a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and was pulled after 6 1/3 innings. Akron scored a run in the frame on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Davis Stoneburner, but it would be the only run charged to Cumpton.

The right-hander allowed just two hits, struck out six, and it was the third straight start in which Cumpton pitched at least six innings and gave up no more than one run and he has a 0.84 ERA in those starts. The run Cumpton surrendered in the sixth ended a personal 20-inning scoreless streak.

Meanwhile, House went eight innings and the only run the Curve scored against him came when Jarek Cunningham hit an RBI single with two outs in the eighth. House gave up five hits while striking out three, and he retired 15 straight Curve hitters in a stretch from the second to seventh inning.

Loek Van Mil (1-1), a 7-foot-1 reliever, kept Altoona off the scoreboard in the ninth and 10th in a winning effort.

The Curve outhit the Aeros, 7-4, but the eighth was the only inning in which the Curve had more than one hit.

Brock Holt continued his recent hot streak and had the only two-hit game of any Curve player. Holt now has two hits in each of Altoona's last four games, and he is 8-for-18 (.444) in that span.
