Andrea’s celebrates 20 years of dance

Recital set for Saturday at Jaffa Shrine Center

Andrea's School of Dance will celebrate 20 years of dance with an evening of entertainment inspired by places around the globe.

This 20th recital, titled "Rockin' on Top of the World," will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Jaffe Shrine Center, Altoona. Tickets are available at the door. They are $8 for reserved floor seating and $6 for general admission.

"Rockin' on Top of the World" will feature all of the dancers from Andrea's School of Dance, including those from the competition team, The MainStreet Dance Company.

The team is comprised of 31 select students ranging in age from 10 to 18. During competition season, the team showcased its talents in the areas of lyrical, jazz, modern, contemporary, ballet and tap with dances choreographed by Andrea McGraw, owner/artistic director, and Bethany Miller, associate artistic director.

At the 2012 Motion Dance Convention/Competition, several team members participated in master classes with renowned teachers/choreographers and competed as well. The modern routine "Hypnosis" received the top medal of gold and first place senior group. The lyrical solos "It Doesn't Hurt" performed by Megan Martin and "I Will Be" danced by Caitlin Williams received silver medals.

"Winter Song" danced by Bailey Campbell, as well as "A Drop in the Ocean" performed by Bethany Liddick and "Breathe" danced by Emily Miller also received silver medals.

Emily Dinges' ballet routine "Metamorphosis" received a gold medal and second place senior solo.

The lyrical solo "When No One is Watching" and contemporary solo "Child of the Troubles," choreographed and performed by Colin Heininger, also received gold medals.

The routine "Child of the Troubles" came in first place senior male solo, received highest overall score and took home the best choreography award.

Scholarships to next year's Motion were awarded to Colin Heininger, Anna Lovrich and Courtney Pier.

The MainStreet Dance Company competed at Encore and StarQuest Dance Competitions in March and April bringing home many top awards. Many small groups performed as follows.

The junior jazz routine "Determinate" received fourth place in category and gold at both events. The teen lyrical dance "When the Rain Comes" took home a gold, third place in category, high gold and a special award for "Perfect Prop."

The recreational jazz routine "Rock What You Got" earned gold, first place in category, first place overall recreational top senior small group and a high gold.

"Party Around the World" senior jazz dance received third place in category and gold at both events.

"Discombobulate," a senior jazz routine choreographed by McGraw, received platinum at both events, first place in category, first place overall top senior small group, outstanding group costume award, choreography award, odyssey award for most entertaining and fourth place overall top score.

The senior lyrical dance "Lay 'Em Down" came in third place in category and was awarded gold at both events. "Stand Up," senior lyrical routine choreographed by McGraw, received platinum at both events, first place in category, was an odyssey award nominee and earned fifth place overall top score. The modern dance "Hypnosis" choreographed by Miller, received platinum, first place in category, third place overall top senior small group, high gold and special award for "Fantastic Focus."

"Rockin' on Top of the World," a senior large group tap routine received gold, second place in category and high gold. The senior production routine "Fosse Posse," choreographed by McGraw received a gold, first place in category, top score senior production, high gold, choreography award and top score overall senior production. Katie Burket, Kayla Myers and Logan Reihart performed a lyrical trio to "Held," receiving third place in category and gold at both events.

Christina DeGol and Paige Dinges performed the lyrical dance "Breathe Me" and were awarded gold, second place in category, high gold and fourth place top score overall.

The contemporary trio choreographed by Colin Heininger and performed by Bailey Campbell, Colin Heininger and Caitlin Williams received platinum at both events, first place in category, second place top senior duet/trio, fifth place top score overall and the fusion award for most entertaining.

Bethany Harker performed a jazz solo to "According to You," receiving a silver, first place in category and gold. Jessica Haduck danced in the open category to "Watch Me Walk," taking home gold at both events and fourth place in category.

"Metamorphosis," a contemporary ballet routine performed by Emily Dinges, was awarded gold at both events, first place in category and a special award for "Nice Moves."

The contemporary dance "Winter Song" by Bailey Campbell received gold, third place in category and high gold.

"Child of the Troubles," a contemporary routine choreographed and performed by Colin Heininger received diamond, first place in category, platinum plus, first place in category, fifth place overall top score senior solos. Megan Martin danced to "It Doesn't Hurt" receiving a silver, fourth place in category and gold.

"I Will Be" performed by Caitlin Williams was awarded gold at both events and second place in category. "Breathe" performed by Emily Miller received gold at both events and third place in category. Bethany Liddick danced to "A Drop in the Ocean" receiving gold, second place in category and high gold. Colin Heininger danced a self-choreographed routine to "When No One is Watching." He received diamond, first place in category, judge's choice best choreography, first place top senior super soloist and platinum.

Performances from all the students at Andrea's School of Dance, in addition to these many award-winning dances, can be enjoyed at this special 20th recital.

Students also will be presenting "The Big Ballet" to a patriotic theme titled "Star-Spangled Spectacular."
