Exhibit shows slave quilts
BEDFORD - The Bedford County Arts Center opened an exhibit this week featuring a collection of slave quilt collages by Penelope Wilson. The exhibit will be open through June 30.
Wilson was inspired to create the works after learning about symbols hidden in the patterns of slave quilts, "quilt codes" which may have helped escaped slaves move north to freedom.
The public is invited to meet the artist at a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Arts center hours are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
