Hollidaysburg Y offers classes

HOLLIDAYSBURG - The Hollidaysburg Area YMCA is hosting an array of classes for all ages. Some of the upcoming classes include:

Fun With Food (for students in third through sixth grade): 10 a.m. to noon June 11 to 14 and 9 a.m. to noon June 15. Cost is $60 for members and $75 for nonmembers.

Fun with Food is a class geared toward helping kids become independent in the kitchen. This class will focus on healthy eating and food preparation. Kids will sample fruits, vegetables and whole grains. The final activity will have the kids create a meal to share with a special adult on Friday. The registration deadline is June 8.

Radical Art Camp (for students in kindergarten through eighth grade): 1 to 3 p.m. June 11 to 15. Cost is $50 for members and $60 for nonmembers.

Want to make some 3D art using gum drops? How about create a giant 3D dome you can fit inside? This camp has many other art projects that include 3D shapes and radical creations using shapes in unusual methods. Join us for this week long adventure in geometrical art.

Civil War Camps 1 and 2 (for students in third through seventh grade). Cost is $60 for members and $70 for nonmembers.

Session 1 - 10 a.m. to noon June 18 to 22. During this weeklong class, students will be trained as a soldier and see what life was like during the Civil War. They will also make hard tack and a house wife kit. The camp will conclude with a mock battle.

Session 2 - 10 a.m. to noon June 25 to 29. This camp will teach students how soldiers loaded and fired a cannon. Participants will create and use toys that were used during the 1860s. They will explore the life of a soldier even more by learning about battle strategies and music from the Civil War. To end the week, there will be a mock battle.

Ladies Night, Vampire Style (for ages 14 and older): 6:30 to 9 p.m. June 29, July 27 and Aug. 17. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

Vampire lovers will meet vampires from many popular book genres. During the evening, they will also learn a little vampire history and enjoy a good spaghetti meal. The meal includes spaghetti, salad and drink.
